The members of OWLS Outreach have developed several hands-on modules on Ecology and Evolutionary biology suitable for 5th-8th grade students. Our goal is to engage local students in hands-on science. Typically, our lessons include and introductory PowerPoint presentation that is aimed at introducing basic concepts and getting students excited about learning more about the topic in the real world. This is followed by an in-class activity where we encourage students to first propose an hypothesis and then discuss how as scientists they would go about designing an experiment, collecting data, and analyzing data to be able to refute/support the hypothesis. We then conduct the activity/experiment where students are able to apply the knowledge and skills that they’ve learned. Finally, we discuss the results from our in-class activity/experiment and how they refute or support our hypothesis.
Over the past 5 years, we have visited 74 classes at 11 schools and taught 1631 students on topics including: Natural Selection and Adaptation, Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Food Webs, and Predator and Prey Population Dynamics.
After a pause in visits, we are excited to offer lessons in-person to your classroom once again! All of our team has been vaccinated against the coronavirus and we are happy to accommodate safety needs for you and your students. We will continue to have video modules available on the Virtual Lessons with OWLS Outreach page of our website for you to utilize.
If you would like to inquire about an in-person visit to your classroom, please contact us at owlsoutreach@gmail.com.
